Luka Koper, d.d. manages the whole area of the Port of Koper, including all its terminals, on the basis of a 35-year long concession agreement signed in year 2008 with the Slovenian Ministry of Transport. The company is celebrating its 60th anniversary in year 2017.
The Port of Koper, which lies at the northern edge of the Adriatic Sea, is the only Slovenian international port. The port stretches on an area of 300 hectares where practically any kind of cargo is being handled and stored – from general cargo, perishable goods and livestock to containers, cars, dry and liquid bulks. The Port of Koper is a transit oriented port. About 30% of the handled cargo is covering Slovenian orders, where all the rests are transits for Austria, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia and other Central and Eastern European countries.
The port traffic amounted to 22 million tonnes of cargo in year 2016, where about 2/3 of cargo are represented by imports, 1/3 by exports. In 2016 an important milestone was reached also by handling almost 750,000 container TEUs and 650,000 cars.
It is estimated that about 5,000 people are directly or indirectly employed by the port business, which means that the port sector is one of the most important economic activities in the Coastal-Karst region.
Luka Koper employs directly 850 employees and is a social and environmental responsible company. Monitoring and managing environmental impacts of the port activity has become part of regular company activities. In year 2000 the Port of Koper was the first Mediterranean port to establish an environment management system according to the ISO 14001 standard applying to all port activities. The certificate was upgraded in year 2010 with the company’s certification in accordance to the EMAS scheme.
